NovelKeys has begun selling the pre-assembled Classic-TKL retro keyboard
NovelKeys has begun selling the Classic-TKL Underscore Edition—a pre-assembled, retro-style mechanical keyboard without a numeric keypad. Previously, the Classic-TKL model was only available as a DIY kit. The pre-built version costs $189, according to The Verge.
The keyboard features a TKL layout—meaning it lacks a numeric keypad—and supports only wired connectivity. It features a plastic chassis, rubber-foot mounting, a silicone base for sound dampening, hot-swappable MX switch sockets, RGB backlighting, and a light bar. The backlighting and light bar can be turned off, and key assignments can be customized via the Via web app.
The Classic-TKL Underscore Edition is available in three colors: clay (a warm beige), boulder (gray-brown), and lichen (a muted green). The kit includes Classic Blue linear switches, GMK CYL Classic Beige keycaps, a USB-A to USB-C cable, and pre-installed and pre-configured TypePlus stabilizers.

According to The Verge, the Classic Blue switches have an actuation force of 53 grams and a full-travel force of 63 grams. The reviewer noted the smoothness of the switches, almost imperceptible play, and the tuned stabilizers, which prevent rattling or clicking on the keys.
NovelKeys owner Michael Sikler told the publication that the finished version was created for enthusiasts who want to recommend the keyboard to friends and family, as well as for users who like the components and appearance of such models, but who don’t want to assemble the device themselves. The Verge notes that in September 2024, building the same keyboard from scratch with stabilizers and keycaps of similar cost set the reviewer back $276. The ready-to-use Underscore Edition costs $100 more than the basic kit without switches, keycaps, and stabilizers.
