Startup founders and venture investors urge against weakening EU Inc — TechCrunch

European startup founders and venture investors have called on EU lawmakers in an open letter to preserve the key provisions of the EU Inc initiative. The campaign promotes a pan-European company statute that would allow businesses to register under common rules and operate across different European Union countries.

Negotiations on the final text

The signatories fear that the future legislation could become unusable if its central elements are weakened. Negotiations on the final text are continuing between the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. As TechCrunch reports, some national lobbying groups have already raised objections to certain aspects of the European Commission’s proposal, including Germany’s association of notaries.

With around 100 days remaining before the winter recess of European institutions, the letter’s authors urged that the proposal be preserved. In their view, EU Inc could reduce the barriers and fragmentation that complicate the work of European companies, while also encouraging investment and a new wave of entrepreneurship.

Register and employee stock options

The letter separately emphasizes technical provisions on which, according to the campaign’s initiators, the practical usability of the new corporate status will depend. They insist on a single central company register. The authors also propose taxing employees on stock options only when they actually dispose of those options.

Back in 2024, Index Ventures partner and EU Inc supporter Martin Mignot told TechCrunch that the details of the future regulation would be decisive. The new letter was signed, among others, by Accel partner Sonali De Rycker, Sequoia partner Michael Moritz, and Atomico founder Niklas Zennström. The campaign was also supported by the founders of unicorn companies Alan, ElevenLabs, Lovable, Mistral, and Synthesia; some of these companies are headquartered in the United States.
