A Day of Forgiveness and Reconciliation: What to Do on April 17

On April 17, Ukraine celebrates Good Friday of Holy Week and the feast day of the icon of the Mother of God, "The Life-Giving Spring." This is a time when solemn services are held in churches, and in popular tradition, the day is associated with forgiveness, reconciliation, and good deeds. Believers believe that now is the time to resolve conflicts and ask for forgiveness.

On this day, Orthodox Christians commemorate the icon of the Mother of God “Life-Giving Spring,” which tradition credits with stories of healing and helping people. According to legend, water from the spring associated with this icon has repeatedly become a symbol of renewal and strength, and the shrine itself eventually became part of the great ecclesiastical tradition of Constantinople.

Additionally, April 17 is associated with several church commemorations according to the new calendar, including the Holy Martyr Simeon of Persia, the Venerable Akakios, the Martyr Adrian, and Saint Agapitus, Pope of Rome. All these figures in the church tradition symbolize steadfastness of faith and spiritual fortitude.

This day also falls on Good Friday of Holy Week, when festive services continue in churches, and the mood among the faithful remains joyful after Easter. Among the people, this day is often called Forgiveness Day, because it is customary to ask for forgiveness from loved ones, recall grievances, and let them go in order to conclude the Easter season with a light heart.

Tradition also includes the custom of helping one another and doing good deeds. In some regions, water was blessed and sprinkled on vegetable gardens, in the belief that this would bring a better harvest, while beekeepers took their hives out to the apiaries and paid special attention to the bees. This is the origin of the folk name Zosima the Beekeeper, associated with beliefs about bees as a symbol of labor and prosperity.

Separately, this day is considered auspicious for family gatherings and reconciliation. People tried to visit relatives, mend relationships, and also paid attention to simple purification rituals—for example, washing with cold water, which in folk beliefs symbolized health and freshness for the entire year.
