Ten militants who fought on the side of Russia were sentenced to up to 15 years in prison
The court found ten individuals—native to the Donetsk and Luhansk regions and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea—guilty of voluntarily joining the Russian Federation’s occupying forces and participating in hostilities against Ukraine.
According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, all were convicted of treason and collaboration. They were each sentenced to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.
According to the investigation, between 2014 and 2024, the men joined illegal armed groups in the temporarily occupied territories. Some of them voluntarily signed contracts with the occupying forces, while others agreed to serve in exchange for release from pretrial detention.
The defendants performed various functions within Russian military units: they served as riflemen, assault troops, sappers, flamethrower operators, drivers, gunners, and other military personnel. According to the prosecutor’s office, one of the convicted individuals rose to the rank of commander of a motorized rifle platoon.
The prosecutor’s office notes that the militants participated in assaults on Ukrainian positions, built defensive fortifications, transported ammunition, and passed on information about the locations of Ukrainian troops.
All of the convicted individuals were detained by Ukrainian military personnel during combat operations in the Bakhmut, Kramatorsk, and Pokrovsk districts.
