A study revealed how much people earn in the defense sector
The median salary in the defense technology (DefTech) sector in Ukraine has remained at $2,500 over the past six months. At the same time, the median income for developers has increased by $350, reaching $3,200. This is according to a study by DOU.
According to analysts, salaries in DefTech generally remain lower than in the traditional IT sector. The median income in defense technology is $2,500, compared to $2,700 in civilian IT, and developers earn an average of $3,200, compared to $3,500.
At the same time, in a number of specializations, salaries in the defense sector exceed market rates. In particular, the largest gap was observed among DevOps and SRE specialists, as well as specialists in data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.
The highest median salaries in DefTech are earned by DevOps Engineers ($5,000), Hardware Engineers ($4,000), and product managers ($3,700).
The study also showed that entry-level professionals (Interns and Juniors) in the defense sector earn more than their counterparts in traditional IT—$1,150 versus $900. In contrast, professionals at the Senior, Lead+, and Manager levels have higher incomes in the civilian IT sector.
In terms of work arrangements, nearly half of DefTech employees (47%) work in a hybrid model, 33% work exclusively from the office, and only 20% work entirely remotely.
