A former colonel from Kherson was sentenced to life in prison for treason

A resident of Kherson was sentenced to life imprisonment with confiscation of property for treason and violations of the laws and customs of war.

This was reported by the Kherson Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the investigation, the 45-year-old former colonel of the internal service voluntarily defected to the Russian occupiers in May 2022.

He assumed the position of the so-called “deputy head of the Kherson Regional Penitentiary Service,” established by the occupying authorities.

While in office, the convicted man ensured the functioning of the region’s seized penitentiary system.

In particular, he led teams that conducted searches in cells, office premises, and on the grounds of correctional facilities.

In the summer of 2022, the man carried out orders from the occupying authorities regarding the transfer of prisoners.

This involved transporting individuals from colonies in the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions to a facility in Kherson.

In October 2022, under his supervision, some of the prisoners were transported to a penal colony on the left bank of the Kherson region.

After that, they were deported to penal institutions in Russia and other temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.

The court handed down the sentence in absentia.

The convicted person will begin serving his sentence from the moment of his actual arrest.

According to law enforcement officials, the case involves the illegal transfer and deportation of approximately 1,700 prisoners.

Efforts are currently underway to identify all individuals involved in these crimes.

Ukrainehas identified Russian commanders involved in the attack on Sumy on Palm Sunday.

In Luhansk, the occupiers sentenced a Polish citizen for participating in battles for Ukraine.

Additionally, in the temporarily occupied city of Sevastopol, Russian occupiers sentenced former Ukrainian Armed Forces soldier Ruslan Chorny-Shvets to 18 years in prison.

In Germany, a Russian man attacked Russian theater and film actor Artur Smolyaninov, who was added to Russia’s list of “terrorists and extremists” for condemning the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. An unknown individual used profanity against the actor and threatened to “tear him to pieces” when he arrives in Russia.

Soviet and Russian actress and singer Alla Pugacheva stood by her husband, Maxim Galkin, and asked the Russian authorities to add her to the list of “foreign agents.”
