“The European Union will allocate €75 million in grant aid for the restoration of the New Safe Confinement at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. This was announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the G7 summit,” according to a statement from the Ministry of Energy.
It is noted that the funds will be used to restore the protective structure over the destroyed fourth power unit of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which was damaged as a result of Russian attacks.
“Restoring damaged energy infrastructure, increasing the resilience of the power grid, and ensuring a reliable energy supply remain among our priorities. I am grateful to the European Commission and all our partners for their unwavering support,” commented First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal.
Earlier, international partners announced the provision of 42.5 million euros for the restoration of the new safe confinement (the Chernobyl Shelter) at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
The EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, strongly condemned the Russian drone strike on the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, calling the attack “reckless.”
