The EU will launch the first phase of accession talks with Ukraine on June 15 — von der Leyen

On June 15, the European Union will officially launch accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. All EU member states have agreed to open the first negotiation chapter for both countries.

This was announced by President Ursula von der Leyen.

According to her, the first cluster will be opened during the Intergovernmental Conference on June 15. It will address fundamental issues and the basic principles of the EU accession process.

It includes issues of the rule of law, the functioning of democratic institutions, the protection of human rights, and other key values upon which the EU is built.

The launch of the first cluster will mark the start of the practical phase of negotiations on the future membership of Ukraine and Moldova in the European Union.

The European Commission has not confirmed reports that Hungary has lifted its veto on €6.6 billion from the European Peace Facility, which is earmarked for military support to Ukraine. Officials in Brussels state that they currently have no confirmed information regarding the release of these funds.
