The Verbytsky Case Has Been Pending for Over a Year Without Any Charges: What Are NABU and SAPO Doing?
The criminal investigation into the possible illicit enrichment of former Deputy Prosecutor General Dmytro Verbytskyi, which was opened by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) in May 2024, has not yet resulted in the issuance of a formal charge.
After being dismissed from his post, Verbytsky returned to Odesa, registered for military service, and, according to available information, received a deferment from mobilization due to his graduate studies.
His professional ties with Boris Indychenko, head of the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor’s Office, are also mentioned in public discourse. It is noted that they worked together for a long time in the prosecutor’s office.
Particular attention is drawn to an episode involving the purchase of real estate, which has previously been featured in journalistic investigations. This concerns a house purchased at a price that, according to investigators, was significantly below market value.
At the same time, no information regarding the results of the investigation or procedural decisions in the case has been made public yet. As of the time of publication, there are no official comments from NABU, the SAPO, or Dmytro Verbytskyi himself regarding the situation.
Previously, the editorial staff of the online media outlet UA.NEWS sent a follow-up request to People’s Deputy and Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada’s Temporary Investigative Commission (TIC) on the investigation of possible unlawful actions by officials of state authorities, other state bodies, andentities in the public sector of the economy that could have harmed Ukraine’s economic security, Yaroslav Zheleznyak, requesting that he take parliamentary action regarding the investigation into the illegal enrichment of former Deputy Prosecutor General Dmytro Verbytskyi.
Additionally, UA.NEWS received a response from the State Financial Monitoring Service of Ukraine to its inquiry to the National Agency for Corruption Prevention (NAZK) regarding the application of enhanced financial monitoring to former Deputy Prosecutor General Dmytro Verbytskyi as a “politically exposed person” (PEP).
It was recently reported that former Deputy Prosecutor General Dmytro Verbytskyi has officially launched his political career. The Odesa regional branch of the All-Ukrainian Union “Batkivshchyna” confirmed in response to a request from UA.News that Verbytskyi is already a member of Yulia Tymoshenko’s party.
Previously, the controversial former Deputy Prosecutor General Dmytro Verbytskyi, who was dismissed following an investigation into illegally acquired luxury property, was unable to “clear” his assets through the courts. The Kyiv District Administrative Court confirmed that the conclusion by NACP investigators that Verbytsky had 37.5 million “excess” hryvnias was lawful.
The Verkhovna Rada Committee on Law Enforcement directly appealed to the leadership of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) demanding a response to the delay in the investigation into former Deputy Prosecutor General Dmytro Verbytskyi.
