What is the religious holiday in Ukraine on July 6
On Monday, July 6, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Venerable Sisoes the Great, one of the most famous hermits of the 4th–5th centuries.
This saint is a symbol of absolute humility and inner monasticism, having devoted his life to unceasing prayer in the Egyptian desert of Skete.
According to church tradition, Sisoes the Great was a spiritual disciple and successor to the great fathers, particularly St. Anthony the Great.
After his mentor’s death, Siso settled in his cave, where he chose the austere path of fasting and silence, completely renouncing worldly glory and external attention.
The reverend’s spiritual feat was based on deep self-awareness and a striving for the perfection of the soul. His disciples recalled that Siso always considered himself the least among people, feeling as though he were beginning his journey of faith anew every day.
One of the saint’s most important traits was his ability to teach not so much through words as through the state of his own heart and his wise silence.
Even on his deathbed, when asked by his disciples about attaining salvation, he humbly replied, “I do not even know if I have begun to repent.”
According to tradition, the last moments of the saint’s life were illuminated by an unearthly light, as his face glowed and his disciples witnessed his invisible conversation with the angels.
Although the exact date of his passing is unknown, church tradition dates this event to the early 5th century.
In addition, according to the Julian calendar, which some believers follow, July 6 is also the day on which the memory of the martyr Agrippina of Rome is honored.
She suffered for her faith in Christ during the brutal persecutions of the third century, bravely enduring torture and becoming an example of an unbreakable spirit.
As for the folk traditions of this day, our ancestors paid special attention to the morning dew, which they believed had healing properties.
It was believed that walking barefoot through the dew strengthened one’s health and filled the body with vital energy, after which one should put on warm socks to “lock in” the benefits.
There were also certain prohibitions dictated by folk beliefs: on Sysoi’s Day, it was not recommended to count money or plan financial transactions in order to avoid material losses.
People were also warned against making hasty decisions, as it was believed that any rush on this day was doomed to failure.
Weather signs also helped predict the nature of the coming season, particularly the state of nature in the morning.
For example, bright, cloudless sunshine promised long-lasting, stable weather, while morning fog signaled a clear and warm day.
