August is a special time for anglers. The heat is gradually subsiding, the nights are getting noticeably cooler, and the water is slowly cooling down and becoming richer in oxygen. The underwater inhabitants sense this perfectly and start putting on weight in preparation for fall. If you dream of spending a morning with a fishing rod on the shore, watching the fog lift over the water, keep this detailed guide handy for the week of August 17–23.

17–18: Time for Predators and the Morning Dawn
The start of the week will bring good action in deep water and along the edges. Thanks to the cool nights, small fish come out to feed in shallow water, and the big, toothy predators follow close behind.
Keep an eye out for perch and pike. For perch, small soft plastics, spinners, and poppers work perfectly at dawn right now. Pike, on the other hand, are starting to respond more actively to wobblers and medium-depth wobblers. If you prefer non-predatory fish, you can catch roach and bream at depth before sunrise using a feeder rod or a standard float rod.
It’s best to head out to the water while it’s still dark so your gear is already in the water by 5 a.m. The best bite will last until about 9 a.m., before the sun starts to get too hot.

19–20: Carp Frenzy and Evening Bites
Midweek, when the water temperature stabilizes, is prime time for serious bottom-fishing enthusiasts.
During these days, carp, crucian carp, and sazan are at their most voracious. They’re actively searching for nutritious food as they prepare for the coming cold snap. Look for them near reeds, submerged snags, or at the boundary between muddy and sandy bottoms. To attract large fish, don’t skimp on groundbait, but be sure to include “meaty” components: feed-grade bloodworms, chopped earthworms, or maggots. It’s best to use combination baits on the hook—for example, corn with a maggot (the so-called “sandwich” rig).
If you can’t make it in the morning—don’t worry. The evening bite, from 6:00 PM until dark, can yield even bigger catches these days than the morning bite.
August 21–22: Trophy Weekend and Night Fishing
Friday and Saturday promise to be the most action-packed days of the week for anglers. Fish are very active before the weekend, so this is the best time to break out your strongest tackle.
This is the ideal time for night catfish fishing using live bait, live fish, or bird liver near deep pools. Large trophy bream also bite well on a feeder at night. For spinning enthusiasts, Friday evening and Saturday offer a great chance to catch walleye, which venture into shallow sandbars and riffles to hunt for fry immediately after sunset.
Don’t forget your landing net and a good flashlight. And most importantly—experiment with your rigs: if the fish aren’t biting, adjust the leader length or hook size.

23: Time by the Water and Deep Relaxation
On Sunday, the pressure on the water bodies traditionally increases: vacationers are bustling around, and more boats appear on the water. The fish become more cautious and move farther from the shore.
On this day, don’t expect record catches. It’s better to take a light spinning rod, sit in a quiet, cozy cove, and simply catch some roach, rudd, or small crucian carp using semolina or bread crumbs. It’s a wonderful day to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, cook a fragrant fish soup over a campfire with your first catch, and simply enjoy the August warmth.
