Kinakh recounted how Kuchma threatened Putin with the use of the Ukrainian Armed Forces during the conflict over Tuzla
Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Anatoliy Kinakh shared his recollections of the events surrounding Tuzla Island in 2003, stating that it was then that the character of Ukraine’s second president, Leonid Kuchma, was most clearly revealed.
According to Kinakh, during an official visit, he and the president received a report about the escalating situation around Tuzla, after which they decided to return to Kyiv immediately.
“Kuchma warned Putin in no uncertain terms: ‘If you take any further steps, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be deployed,’” Kinakh said.
He noted that Kuchma viewed Russia’s actions as a threat to Ukraine’s territorial integrity and promptly established direct contact with the Russian side.
According to the former prime minister, Ukraine managed to stop the attempt to violate its borders at that time, but the state failed to draw all the necessary conclusions from those events.
“That was a very serious lesson, from which, unfortunately, we did not draw the necessary conclusions,” Kinakh emphasized.
