The Constitution of Ukraine has been translated into sign language for the first time

To mark the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of Ukraine, the country’s fundamental law became available for the first time in sign language on June 23. The initiative aims to make this important state document more accessible to people with hearing impairments.

The Verkhovna Rada noted that the translation of the Ukrainian Constitution into Ukrainian sign language will help make constitutional rights and norms more understandable to people with hearing impairments and will be another step toward accessibility.

To ensure the text of the Constitution is understandable to people from different regions of Ukraine, nine experts fluent in various dialects of Ukrainian sign language were involved in the translation, along with additional specialists in Ukrainian sign language and law.

For the translation, sign language experts recorded each article and section of the Constitution in separate videos, which people with hearing impairments can view freely online.

You can view the sign language translation of the Constitution on the Verkhovna Rada’s website via this link.

As a reminder, the original copy of Pylyp Orlyk’s Constitution from the National Archives of Sweden was brought to Ukraine to mark the 30th anniversary of Independence, and starting August 16, it will be on display at St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv.
