"Mathematics must remain a required subject on the National Multidisciplinary Test," says Education Ombudsman Leshchik

"Mathematics must remain a required subject on the National Multidisciplinary Test," says Education Ombudsman Leshchik

Mathematics must remain a required subject on the National Multidisciplinary Test (NMT).

This opinion was expressed by Ukraine’s Education Ombudsman, Nadiya Leshchyk, while commenting on initiatives to change the testing format.

She is convinced that removing this subject will negatively impact the training of future professionals.

The Ombudsman emphasized the strategic importance of the exact sciences for the country’s recovery.

“My position is against it. Mathematics develops basic cognitive skills and analytical thinking. Ukraine needs specialists for the economy, infrastructure, and the defense sector both now and in the future, and professions in these fields rely on the exact sciences. Removing mathematics from the NMT will only mask and deepen the crisis of mathematical (ill)literacy,” emphasized Nadiya Leshchyk.

In addition to the issue of required subjects, the official commented on the proposal to split the test into several days. According to her, such an approach is realistic only for western regions.

In border and frontline regions, such changes would create serious security and financial threats.

Splitting the exam could significantly limit graduates’ access to higher education.

Nadiya Leshchyk wrote about this on her Facebook page.
