Math Will Remain a Required Subject on the National Multidisciplinary Test: Minister Explains the Changes
Mathematics should remain a required subject on the national multidisciplinary test.
At the same time, the format of the NMT may change. Specifically, the possibility of introducing a retake option is being considered.
According to Butenko, the public debate regarding mathematics in the NMT is important, but the subject itself, in his opinion, should remain mandatory.
“This is an extremely important issue. As you can see, it has stirred up public opinion, and there is an ongoing debate about it. Personally, I am convinced that mathematics should remain part of the unified test. We can discuss its weight in determining the overall score. We can discuss the difficulty of the questions and the verification of these questions. But for now, it seems to me that it is an integral part of the National Multidisciplinary Test,” Butenko said.
He also noted that he had received instructions from the president to review the format of the National Multidisciplinary Test, make it more flexible, reduce stress for students, and provide the option to retake the test.
“Therefore, we will work very closely with our colleagues to find ways to fulfill the president’s instructions and make the NMT effective and less stressful for our students,” the minister said.
Among the possible changes being considered is the option to retake the NMT.

The Verkhovna Rada proposes retaining four subjects on the 2027 NMT.
As a reminder, the Ukrainian Center for Educational Quality Assessment has published the results of the additional sessions of the National Multidisciplinary Test (NMT-2026).
