The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned Putin's provocative visit to the occupied island of Iturup
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strong statement regarding Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s visit to the occupied Japanese island of Iturup. The ministry emphasized that it views this move by the Kremlin as a deliberate attempt to escalate tensions, intimidate the region, and legitimize the illegal occupation of Japan’s Northern Territories.
Ukrainian diplomats stressed that Tokyo’s sovereignty over these islands is based on historical facts and international law, and that the prolonged occupation does not provide Russia with any legal grounds. The Foreign Ministry noted that Moscow is employing the same aggressive and imperialist strategy in both Europe and the Pacific region, attempting to redraw international borders by force.
The ministry expressed full solidarity with Japan and called on the international community to strengthen sanctions and isolate the aggressor until Russia ceases its occupation of foreign territories.

As a reminder, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin visited Iturup Island in the Kuril Islands—which is the subject of a territorial dispute between Russia and Japan—for the first time. Tokyo has already reacted to the Russian leader’s trip and lodged a strong protest with Moscow.
