In the Odesa region, emergency measures are being taken to restore water levels in Katlabus
In the Odesa region, due to a significant drop in water levels, the forced filling of the Katlabukh Reservoir has begun. The main pumping station of the Suvorov Irrigation System has been activated to supply water.
The decision was made due to the critical water management situation and the need to replenish water reserves in the reservoir.
Forced filling of the Katlabukh Reservoir began on August 10 due to a critical drop in water levels in the reservoir and the Danube River.
To this end, the Izmail Water Management Administration activated the main pumping station of the Suvorov Irrigation System.
The work is being carried out as part of the State Target Program for Comprehensive Water Supply to Areas Affected by Military Operations.
Katlabukh supplies water to the Danube region
The ministry emphasizes that Katlabukh is a critically important water resource for the Ukrainian Danube region. Filling the reservoir should stabilize water levels, reduce environmental risks, and meet the needs of the population and the agricultural sector.
At the same time, to ensure the stable refilling of Katlabukh in the long term, the water supply system must be modernized and a comprehensive solution to the problem must be implemented.
Water shortages have affected a significant part of Europe
This summer, the problem of low water levels is not limited to Ukraine. According to the ministry, water levels in certain sections of the Danube in Europe have dropped to record lows.
Ukraine, which will chair the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River in 2026, has initiated a joint review of the low-water situation in the countries of the basin and the development of unified approaches to assessing droughts.
Signs of low water levels are also being observed in Ukrainian rivers due to the heat and lack of precipitation. In some water bodies, water levels have dropped to historically low levels.
