In the Vinnytsia region, a court sentenced a woman who defrauded a random passerby under the pretext of “removing curses.” The victim withdrew money from her bank account several times and handed it over to the stranger, losing a total of 42,700 hryvnias.
During the trial, the defendant fully admitted her guilt. She was sentenced to a prison term and ordered to compensate the victim for material and emotional damages.
In the Vinnytsia region, a court found a woman guilty of swindling more than 42,000 hryvnias from a passerby by convincing her that the money was supposedly needed to perform a special “ritual” to remove a curse. According to the case file, the incident took place at a public transportation stop. The defendant approached an unfamiliar woman, struck up a conversation, and gradually convinced her that she was supposedly under a curse.
To “purify” the money, the fraudster offered to perform a special ritual. To do this, she said, the woman needed to give her the cash. The victim believed the stranger’s words. She withdrew funds from her bank account several times and handed them over to the woman to perform the so-called ritual. As a result, the defendant fraudulently obtained 42,700 hryvnias.
During the trial, the woman did not deny her guilt. She explained that she had used personal information she had previously obtained from the victim to gain her trust and convince her of the necessity of the “ritual.” “She then disposed of the funds she received at her own discretion,” according to the case file.
The victim also filed a civil suit. She requested that the defendant be ordered to pay 16,400 hryvnias in compensation for material damages and 30,000 hryvnias in compensation for emotional distress.
The defendant fully admitted to these charges as well. Following the trial, the court found the woman guilty of fraud and sentenced her to 2 years and 6 months in prison. However, taking into account her previous sentence, the final sentence was 3 years and 3 months in prison. In addition, the court fully granted the victim’s civil claim. The court ordered the defendant to pay 16,400 hryvnias in material damages and 30,000 hryvnias in compensation for moral damages. This information is contained in the case file.
