MP Belenyuk has been embroiled in a scandal over an online casino advertisement
Ukrainian MP and Olympic champion Zhan Beleniuk has come under scrutiny for participating in an online casino advertising campaign.
News of the lawmaker promoting the gambling service sparked a debate on social media regarding compliance with laws governing the advertising of gambling. Users have raised the question of whether potential sanctions for such advertising apply not only to bloggers and influencers, but also to members of parliament.
As of now, there have been no official comments from Beleniuk regarding his advertisement and the subsequent criticism.
Zhan Beleniuk is a Ukrainian athlete and politician, an Olympic champion in Greco-Roman wrestling. At the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, he won a gold medal, becoming the first Olympic champion in this sport in the history of independent Ukraine.
Since 2019, Beleniuk has been a member of the Ukrainian Parliament and serves on the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Youth and Sports.
As a reminder, MP Zhan Beleniuk failed to submit updates to his financial disclosure statement on time.
Prior to this, Beleniuk announced the end of his athletic career.
