The UN Security Council will convene an emergency meeting in response to Russian attacks on ships

On Monday, July 27, the UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting to address Russia’s shelling of civilian vessels and port infrastructure in Ukraine. The meeting was initiated at Ukraine’s request on July 20, with the support of France, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Greece, and Latvia.

The request was prompted by systematic Russian strikes on Ukrainian Black Sea ports and maritime export routes. In particular, during the latest attacks on the Odesa region, several ships flying the flags of foreign states were damaged, resulting in the deaths of ten sailors. Representatives of the UN Secretariat’s Political and Humanitarian Affairs Department are expected to deliver briefings to the Security Council.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs summoned Vladimir Ladanov, Russia’s chargé d’affaires, expressing “unequivocal condemnation” of the Russian strike on the civilian dry cargo ship MV Golden Leo near the port of Odesa. Ten people were killed in the attack, including four Indian sailors and a Ukrainian pilot. 

The Ministry of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine emphasized that such attacks pose a danger to international shipping, undermine the stability of global trade, and threaten global food security.
