The NBU will change the typography of the new 2,000-hryvnia banknote

The National Bank of Ukraine has decided to update the typeface used for the denomination on the new 2,000-hryvnia banknote following a public discussion regarding its stylistic similarity to one of the unofficial Cyrillic adaptations of a Russian-origin typeface.

The National Bank noted that it had analyzed the comments from the professional design community and concluded that even potential associations between design elements on the banknote dedicated to Vasyl Stus to the work of a citizen of the aggressor country are unacceptable.

“Vasyl Stus is the conscience of the nation and a moral absolute. A banknote bearing his portrait must be flawless in every detail. When the inscription on a banknote featuring Stus is associated with the work of a citizen of an aggressor country—the very fact of such an association is sufficient,” stated NBU Governor Andriy Pyshnyy.

Consequently, the graphic design of the denomination inscription will be executed in accordance with the official Cyrillic version of the Bickham Script font, without any artistic variations.

The National Bank emphasized that the 2,000-hryvnia banknote has not yet entered production, so the changes will not affect the timeline for its introduction into circulation. As planned, the new banknote will be introduced into circulation on September 4, 2026.

This was reported by the NBU’s press service.

As a reminder, in the fall of 2026, Ukraine will put into circulation a new 2,000-hryvnia banknote featuring a portrait of Ukrainian poet, human rights activist, and dissident Vasyl Stus. His name has become a symbol of the struggle for freedom, human rights, and Ukraine’s independence.
