The Pentagon is deploying the elite 82nd Division to the Middle East to counter Iran

The U.S. Department of Defense is preparing to deploy an additional brigade combat team from the 82nd Airborne Division to support operations in the Middle East. 

According to The Wall Street Journal, an order to deploy the unit, consisting of about 3,000 troops, is expected in the near future. The combat brigade, along with the division headquarters, is being deployed as a rapid-response force capable of launching an airborne assault anywhere in the world in less than 24 hours.

These elite units specialize in capturing airfields and bridgeheads in disputed territories, which would allow the U.S. to use force, if necessary, to unblock the Strait of Hormuz or take control of strategic facilities along the Iranian coast. The possibility of conducting missions to seize stocks of highly enriched uranium is also being considered. Despite preparations for the deployment of troops, U.S. President Donald Trump has not yet made a final decision on conducting a full-scale ground operation.
