Prosecutors have charged Russian paratroopers with the murder of a woman in Bucha
The Ukrainian Prosecutor’s Office has charged two Russian paratroopers whom investigators believe were involved in the shooting of a civilian woman in Bucha during the city’s occupation in March 2022. According to investigators, the woman was trying to flee between buildings when she was shot. Separately, a case has already been referred to court regarding another Russian soldier accused of brutal treatment of civilians during the occupation of the Kyiv region. This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.
The events that took place in Bucha during the Russian occupation continue to be the subject of new criminal proceedings. This time, the Office of the Prosecutor General announced that two servicemen from the 234th Airborne Assault Regiment of the 76th Airborne Division of the Russian Federation have been charged.
According to the investigation, in March 2022, the occupiers were patrolling the area of Sklozavodska Street, where local residents were hiding from shelling. At that moment, they noticed a woman in civilian clothing attempting to run between buildings. “Upon seeing a woman in civilian clothing moving between buildings, the occupiers opened fire on her with automatic weapons,” the investigation materials state.
The woman tried to hide in the annex of one of the houses, but one of the bullets pierced the door and fatally wounded her. She died on the spot. The suspects’ actions have been classified as a violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with the intentional killing of a civilian. One of them is already a defendant in another criminal proceeding regarding the killing of a civilian during the occupation of the Kyiv region, and that case is already in court.
Separately, the investigation has concluded another case involving the Russian National Guard. An indictment has been filed against a senior instructor of the “Kuzbass” special unit, who is accused of threatening civilians, conducting illegal searches, and interrogating people while stationed in Bucha.
The investigation into crimes committed during the occupation of the city continues, and Ukrainian law enforcement agencies are continuing to identify those involved in the killings and abuse of civilians.
An explosion occurred at a military garrison in Russia’s Khabarovsk Krai, which, according to Russian media, may have been directed against Major General Azatbek Omurbekov.
