The water level in the Dniester River has approached a critical level

The lowest water flow on the Dniester River on record was recorded. A critical situation has developed near the town of Zalishchyky in the Ternopil region.

On August 27, specialists from the Ternopil and Chernivtsi Regional Centers for Hydrometeorology conducted special measurements. The water flow in the Dniester was only 23.7 cubic meters per second—the lowest recorded for the river’s open channel in the entire history of observations.

Water levels in the rivers of the Dniester basin are forecast to drop further through August 31—in some places to the lowest long-term averages or even lower.

Experts are warning of low water levels and the possible drying up of certain sections of small rivers. This could complicate the operation of the region’s water management system and cause problems with water supply.

Due to the critical situation, a third—brown—level of danger has been declared.

Ukraine has expressed its readiness to provide support to Moldova and offer solutions should the hydrological situation on the Dniester River worsen. This was announced by Moldova’s Minister of the Environment, Gheorghe Hajder, following talks with his Ukrainian counterpart, Oleksandr Kravchenko.

Earlier, Ukraine and Moldova agreed on joint measures in response to the critical drop in water levels in the Dniester. Over the next two weeks, water releases from the Dniester Reservoir will be reduced from 100 to 85 cubic meters per second.
