Russia has intensified its attacks on the border regions of Chernihiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv Oblasts

Russia has intensified its attacks on the border regions of Chernihiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv Oblasts

Russian troops carry out between 180 and 300 shelling attacks daily on the border regions of the Chernihiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions. State Border Guard Service spokesperson Andriy Demchenko says that the intensity of the attacks has increased recently, and the enemy is primarily using drones, particularly FPV drones and fiber-optic-guided drones. Russia is also using artillery, mortars, aircraft, and guided bombs.

Russian troops have intensified shelling of border areas in three Ukrainian regions at once—Chernihiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv. Between 180 and 300 strikes are recorded there daily. According to him, if one looks at a short period of time, the total number of shelling incidents may have fluctuated, but recently their intensity has nevertheless increased. “If we compare a short period of time, the overall number of shelling incidents has probably not changed. But over the last period, it has indeed increased. In fact, every day we record between 180 and 300 shelling incidents within the Chernihiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions,” Demchenko said.

According to the State Border Guard Service spokesperson, the majority of the attacks consist of strikes by unmanned aerial vehicles. Russian troops are actively using FPV drones and fiber-optic-controlled drones. In addition to drones, the Russians are using artillery, mortars, aircraft, and guided bombs. As a result, border areas are constantly under various types of fire.

The Russians are not only attacking Ukrainian military positions. According to Demchenko, they are also attempting to disrupt the logistics of Ukrainian units and regularly strike settlements located near the border. “The enemy continues to terrorize Ukrainian settlements located near the border. These actions result in deaths and injuries, as well as the destruction of the settlements’ infrastructure,” emphasized the State Border Guard Service spokesperson.

The most challenging situation is currently observed in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions. As early as September 25, Demchenko reported that it was there that border guards were recording the highest number of Russian shelling incidents, and in the Kharkiv region, the enemy continues its daily attempts to expand its zone of control. In the Kharkiv sector, particularly in the Vovchanska community, Russian troops regularly attempt to advance in small infantry groups. Before doing so, they carry out numerous shelling attacks, which complicate the work of Ukrainian units and hinder their approaches to positions.

The situation in the Sumy region also remains tense. According to Demchenko, Russian troops are attempting to expand their zone of control in certain areas, particularly toward the Shostka and Konotop districts and the Yunakiv community. In the Chernihiv region, the situation is somewhat different. Earlier, the State Border Guard Service reported that it had not detected any attempts by Russian infantry or sabotage-reconnaissance groups to cross the border there. At the same time, shelling of the border area continues, and Russian troops are actively using drones and artillery.

In mid-September, Demchenko also warned that Russian sabotage activity in the Chernihiv and Sumy regions could increase. According to him, Russia was building up certain units that could be used for such operations. Thus, the situation on Ukraine’s northern and northeastern borders remains tense. Russia continues to strike military positions, attempts to disrupt logistics, and simultaneously keeps populated areas under fire.

Drones are becoming the primary tool for these attacks. Russian troops particularly frequently use FPV and fiber-optic drones, which are more difficult to detect and intercept at short ranges.

According to Demchenko, there are currently 180–300 attacks per day along the border areas of the Chernihiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions. That is why the threat remains constant for residents of these areas, and the Ukrainian military continues to strengthen its defenses and monitor enemy activity. This was reported by Andriy Demchenko, spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.
