Russia struck an energy facility in Chernihiv, leaving more than 10,000 customers without power
A Russian attack on August 17 damaged an energy facility in Chernihiv. As a result of the strike, more than 10,000 customers were left without power, and at least one person is known to have been injured. Utility workers are ready to begin repairs as soon as the security situation allows.
On the morning of August 17, Russian troops attacked Chernihiv. The strike damaged one of the city’s power facilities. “An energy facility was damaged as a result of the enemy’s attack. More than 10,000 customers in the city of Chernihiv are without power,” Chernihivoblenergo reported.
As a result, thousands of city residents were left without electricity. Utility workers are already preparing for restoration work, but they will only be able to begin once the situation allows them to work without putting people at risk.
The Chernihiv City Council clarified that the strike may have hit the southern part of the city. A fire broke out there following the attack. Later, local authorities reported that at least one person was injured as a result of the Russian strike. Other consequences of the attack are still being assessed.
Utility workers are awaiting permission to resume work
Damage to the power facility places an additional strain on the city’s power grid. At the same time, specialists cannot immediately begin repairs if there is still a threat of further strikes in the area.
“Repair work will begin as soon as the security situation allows,” Chernihivoblenergo stated. No specific timeline has yet been given for when power will be restored to all consumers. This will depend on the nature of the damage and the ability to carry out repairs safely.
Several regions are experiencing power outages
Chernihiv is not the only region where power supply issues arose on August 17 due to Russian shelling. Consumers in six regions of Ukraine were left without power. These include the Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Sumy, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions. The hot weather remains an additional factor. Due to high temperatures, people are using air conditioners and other high-power electrical appliances more frequently, which increases the load on the power grid.
Ukrainians are urged to reduce their electricity consumption during the evening hours—from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.—whenever possible. In particular, energy-intensive appliances should not be turned on during this time unless absolutely necessary. Russia regularly attacks Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, attempting to damage facilities that are critical to the stable power supply of cities and regions. This time, Chernihiv was targeted; due to damage to a power facility, more than 10,000 customers were left without power. As of August 17, 2026, the total combat losses of Russian troops since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine amount to approximately 1,468,760 servicemen.
