Russian drones caused most of the forest fires this week
Over the past week, 78 fires were recorded in the forests managed by the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine,” affecting a total of 55.4 hectares. More than 42 hectares were burned due to falling debris from enemy UAVs, strikes by KAB bombs, and FPV drones.
Due to dry grass, leaves, pine needles, and small branches, a fire can spread rapidly even from a small spark. With favorable wind conditions, the flames can engulf large areas in a short time.
Forest rangers extinguished the most fires in the Chernihiv region (24 fires covering nearly 12 hectares) and the Kyiv region (33 fires covering 10.1 hectares). Fires also broke out as a result of enemy attacks in the Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Volyn, and Mykolaiv regions.
Another cause of forest fires is the spread of fire from the territories of neighboring land users. In particular, over the weekend in Rivne Oblast, strong winds carried fire from a local landfill into the territory of the Sosnivsk Forest District. The fire engulfed 9.7 hectares of forest. Units of the State Emergency Service assisted in extinguishing the fire. As of now, the fire has been contained, and efforts to fully extinguish it are ongoing.
Minor fires also broke out in the Lviv, Zakarpattia, Cherkasy, and Zhytomyr regions—their causes are currently being investigated.
In all cases, it took our forest protection units only a few minutes to detect the fires and begin responding. On average, it took foresters 30–60 minutes to contain a single fire. The average area of a single fire last week did not exceed 0.7 hectares.
Our firefighting teams also actively participated in extinguishing forest fires on the territories of other forest users. In particular, foresters from several regions helped extinguish a fire in the Dnipro-Teteriv State Forestry and Hunting Enterprise, which covered an area of approximately 2,500 hectares.
According to weather forecasts, hot and dry weather will persist across nearly all of Ukraine in the coming days, resulting in an extreme fire danger level.
Please refrain from visiting forests. For safe outdoor recreation within the enterprise’s forest lands, there is a network of over 1,100 recreational sites.
