The SBU foiled a plot to carry out a sabotage operation at a defense plant in Lviv
The Security Service of Ukraine detained a Russian agent in Lviv who was planning to blow up a production facility at one of the enterprises in the defense-industrial complex. According to the investigation, the sabotage was prevented while it was still in the planning stages.
The investigation revealed that the perpetrator attempted to carry out the sabotage by disguising it as a short circuit in production equipment during the manufacturing process.
According to the suspect’s plan, the resulting fire was supposed to trigger explosions that would appear to be caused by a technical accident at the facility. SBU cyber experts thwarted the sabotage and detained the agent after he attempted to start a fire in one of the workshops.
According to the case file, the task assigned by the Russians was carried out by a local resident recruited by the enemy, who was directed through his brother, who resides abroad and collaborates with the aggressor country.
On the instructions of his handler in Russia, the agent got a job as a general laborer at a defense industry enterprise. Subsequently, through his brother, the suspect received step-by-step instructions from a representative of the Russian special services on how to organize the arson and destroy sections containing production facilities.
During searches at the scene, evidence of sabotage and the suspect’s personal belongings were discovered. Investigators from the Security Service informed the agent that he was suspected of violating Part 2 of Article 28 and Part 2 of Article 113 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (sabotage committed by a group of individuals acting in concert under martial law).
The suspect is in custody, and the case materials have already been forwarded to the court. His brother, who is fleeing justice abroad, has also been charged in absentia with the crime.
Both of these accomplices of the enemy face life imprisonment with confiscation of property. Comprehensive operations were carried out by SBU officers in the Lviv region under the procedural guidance of the Lviv Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Defense Affairs of the Western Region.
