The Ukrainian Armed Forces have strengthened their air defense with Swedish Giraffe radar systems
The Ukrainian Armed Forces have taken delivery of state-of-the-art Swedish Giraffe radar systems, which will significantly enhance the military’s capabilities in detecting enemy drones, aircraft, and cruise missiles.
These state-of-the-art systems not only allow for real-time monitoring of airspace but also enable the coordination of air defense units.
These unique radar stations are a high-tech development by the renowned Swedish company Saab.
The main feature of these systems is that they successfully combine advanced radar surveillance capabilities with an integrated command, control, and communications system.
This combination of engineering solutions allows Ukrainian operators to detect potential threats as quickly as possible and promptly coordinate the subsequent actions of firepower units.
The technical specifications of the Swedish systems enable monitoring of large sections of the front lines and border areas.
Saab’s radar stations monitor airspace and detect aerial targets at a maximum range of up to 100 km and altitudes of up to 20 km, depending on the radar model.
These systems demonstrate high effectiveness in tracking a wide variety of targets—from supersonic fighters, cruise missiles, and helicopters to slow-moving, low-altitude UAVs.
A key advantage of these radars in combat conditions is their high mobility and versatility.
Depending on the variant, the station can be deployed on various platforms—stationary, on trucks, tracked vehicles, and pickup trucks—enabling the creation of a flexible radar reconnaissance system.
In addition, the system is capable of simultaneously monitoring airspace, detecting targets for air defense systems, and detecting artillery and mortar fire.
This was officially reported by the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
