Students in Ukraine are at risk of outflow: how universities are competing with European educational institutions

During the war, Ukrainian universities are facing unprecedented challenges, including low scholarships and living conditions, which gradually reduces their competitiveness compared to European higher education institutions. According to Olha Chabaniuk, deputy head of the Trade Union of Education and Science Workers of Ukraine, scholarships are to be revised by 2026, but in the realities of war, this may not be enough to retain students.

In the face of shelling and destruction, Ukrainian universities are trying to maintain their quality of education and teaching methods. Although the number of damaged educational institutions is significant, some universities have managed to increase the number of students by expanding cooperation with foreign universities and introducing joint programs such as Erasmus+.

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, European universities have begun to actively attract Ukrainian students by offering them more loyal admission conditions. This threatens the occupancy of Ukrainian universities as young people are attracted to study abroad opportunities, simplified procedures, and more affordable scholarships, which necessitates improving the Ukrainian education system to curb the outflow of young people.
