A court in Zaporizhzhia sentenced a mother to nine years in prison for selling her son to beg
The Supreme Court in Zaporizhzhia Oblast has convicted a 59-year-old woman who sold her 12-year-old son for exploitation and forced begging on the streets.
Following a public indictment by prosecutors from the Zaporizhzhia Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the defendant was found guilty of trafficking a minor.
The court sentenced her to a severe punishment of nine years in prison.
Investigative authorities fully proved the defendant’s guilt and established the timeline of this cynical crime.
Prosecutors demonstrated in court that after losing her job, the woman initially used her 12-year-old son to collect money under the guise of charity, and in December 2020 sold the child to a stranger for begging in exchange for a monetary reward—600 UAH per day.
The mother regularly received these ill-gotten funds, ignoring her own child’s basic needs.
The boy’s rescue was made possible thanks to the vigilance of ordinary citizens who noticed suspicious activity on the city streets.
The crime was exposed thanks to a concerned resident of Zaporizhzhia who alerted law enforcement to the possible exploitation of a child.
Police officers immediately launched a special operation to apprehend the perpetrator in the act while she was handing the teenager over to the buyer.
Law enforcement authorities documented the criminal acts at the moment the funds were transferred. The woman was detained when she brought the child for sale and received the money.
The court has now concluded its review of all case materials, and the evidence presented by prosecutors has been deemed irrefutable.
The court found the woman guilty of human trafficking for the purpose of exploitation committed against a minor under “Part 3 of Article 149 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine” and sentenced her to 9 years in prison.
