Court Dismisses Case Against Former Ostroh Mayor Accused of Assaulting a Woman
The court dismissed the criminal case against Yuriy Yagodka, the former mayor of Ostroh, who was accused of assaulting a woman. The decision was based on the victim’s statement in court that she had no claims against the defendant.
The Ostroh District Court in Rivne Oblast dismissed the criminal case against Yuriy Yagodka, the former mayor of Ostroh, who was accused of assaulting a woman after she made a remark about Russian music. The incident occurred on Defenders of Ukraine Remembrance Day. Following public outcry, Yuriy Yagodka apologized for his behavior, and city council members terminated his term early.
According to the court’s ruling dated July 27, the incident occurred on August 29, 2024, at approximately 6:00 p.m. A local resident, Lyudmyla Frankovska, was walking past the library in Ostroh, where the Culture and Leisure Center is located, and heard Russian music coming from inside.
The woman entered the building to make a complaint. According to her, Yuriy Yagodka was there, intoxicated, singing the song “Oh, the Viburnum Blooms in the Field by the Stream” along with his female assistants. After a verbal altercation, the official grabbed her by the forearms and shoulders, yanked out a clump of her hair, and tugged at her clothes. Afterward, Lyudmila Frankovska filed a police report alleging that she had suffered bodily injury.
During the court proceedings, the victim withdrew her charges and requested that the criminal case be dismissed.
Judge Volodymyr Nazaruk dismissed the case under Part 1 of Article 125 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (intentional minor bodily injury) due to the victim’s withdrawal of the charges. The ruling may still be appealed in the appellate court.
