Supreme Court Justice Kishakevich was not admitted to the International Criminal Court because he did not know English

Ukraine has lost the opportunity to nominate a representative to the International Criminal Court because one of the candidates did not meet the language requirements. 

This was stated by attorney Oleksiy Shevchuk.

According to him, the ICC confirmed that Supreme Court Justice Lev Kishakevich, who had been selected as the winner of the national competition, did not have a sufficient command of English. As a result, the lawyer asserts, Ukraine’s candidate will not be considered in the current competition.

Shevchuk called the situation a “complete failure” and an “international fiasco.” He believes that Ukraine has lost the opportunity to secure a seat on the ICC for the coming years.

The lawyer also stated that he himself participated in the competition and, according to him, had the highest level of English proficiency (C2), yet was not selected.

In addition, Shevchuk criticized the work of the Ethics Council and those involved in conducting the competition, asserting that it was their decisions that led to the current situation.

As a reminder, Oleksiy Shevchuk, head of the National Association of Lobbyists, called for greater transparency regarding influence on legislative initiatives. 

The High Qualification Commission of Advocates (VKKA) suspended the disciplinary sanction against attorney Shevchuk, and the work of the High Council of Justice has been unblocked.
