Memorable date June 13: Ukraine celebrates the Day of the Liberation of Mariupol in 2014 from Russian occupiers
Every year on June 13, Ukraine commemorates an important event—the liberation of Mariupol from Russian occupiers in 2014. It was on this day in 2014 that the Ukrainian military carried out an operation that resulted in Russian occupation forces losing control of the city of Mariupol.
The assault by the Armed Forces of Ukraine began at 5 a.m., and within a few hours, Ukrainian forces successfully captured the militants’ headquarters (a bank on Hretska Street). As a result of the operation, several separatists were killed, two dozen were taken prisoner, and the same number managed to escape. On the same day, following the victory over the militants, the Ukrainians raised the national flag over the city council.
In the spring of 2022, Mariupol once again became the site of fierce battles, in which the fighters of the Azov Regiment, marines, border guards, and police officers distinguished themselves. The Ukrainian garrison in the city held off the superior forces of the Russian occupiers for nearly three months, buying time to stabilize the situation on other sections of the front. Despite the temporary occupation, Mariupol will always be Ukrainian!

Mariupol is a major industrial city located in the Donetsk region. Population: approximately 500,000 people. Mariupol is among the largest “sea gates” of our country.
