July 29, 2026: Day of Remembrance for Fallen Special Operations Forces Soldiers in Ukraine
On July 29, Ukraine observes the Day of Remembrance for Fallen Soldiers of the Special Operations Forces (SOF) of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This commemorative date is dedicated to Ukrainian special operations forces who gave their lives while carrying out the most difficult combat missions for the sake of the country’s freedom, independence, and territorial integrity. It is a day of mourning, gratitude, and honor for the soldiers whose heroism will forever remain in the history of Ukraine.
History of the Commemorative Date
The Day of Remembrance for Fallen Special Operations Forces Soldiers was established by order of the Commander of the Special Operations Forces, Major General Oleksandr Trepak. It was introduced as a symbol of deep respect for the servicemen who died while carrying out combat missions to defend the Ukrainian people.
Until 2025, July 29 was observed in Ukraine as Special Operations Forces Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. However, in 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed Decree No. 346/2025, which moved the Special Operations Forces’ professional holiday to May 27. At the same time, July 29 became a day of remembrance for the fallen soldiers of this branch of the military.
Why This Day Is Important
Special Operations Forces carry out extremely complex and dangerous tasks: they conduct reconnaissance, special raids, and operations behind enemy lines; rescue hostages; organize resistance movements; and carry out other missions on which the success of combat operations often depends.
Many Ukrainian special operations soldiers have given their lives while fulfilling their military duty. This day of remembrance serves as a reminder of their courage, self-sacrifice, and resilience.
How the Fallen Soldiers Are Honored
On July 29, Ukraine holds memorial events, observes moments of silence, lays flowers at monuments and memorials, and hosts gatherings with the families of fallen servicemen. Military units and educational institutions commemorate the feats of special forces soldiers and hold events dedicated to their memory.
On this day, Ukrainians express their gratitude to all soldiers of the Special Operations Forces who sacrificed their lives for the security and future of the country.
