Gas theft worth 87.5 million hryvnias was uncovered in Chernivtsi
In Chernivtsi, criminals illegally connected a multi-story residential building to the gas distribution system, causing at least 87.5 million hryvnias in losses to the state.
The organizers of the scheme secretly laid underground pipelines to supply fuel to a local boiler room, which had been operating for a long time without official registration or meters.
This large-scale violation was uncovered thanks to the joint efforts of security specialists from Gazmeretzi and Naftogaz.
All collected physical evidence, technical documentation, and inspection results have already been handed over to law enforcement agencies for investigation.
The company intends to severely punish the offenders and will seek full financial compensation through the courts for the entire volume of stolen energy resources.
“The perpetrators illegally laid a gas pipeline to an apartment building, connected to the gas distribution system without authorization, and were effectively stealing gas to power a local boiler room. The losses amount to at least 87.5 million hryvnias,” Koretsky wrote.
The company’s CEO emphasized that such gas thefts by residential and commercial consumers cost the state billions of hryvnias annually.
Amid regular Russian attacks on gas production infrastructure, when the country is forced to purchase expensive imported gas to meet the demands of the heating season, such actions are unacceptable.
The perpetrators are effectively appropriating a strategic resource that Ukrainian communities need to survive the winter.
“We will soon announce the names of the organizers behind this scheme,” Koretsky promised.
He also added that the active involvement of citizens who file reports helps in detecting such illegal connections.
Anyone can anonymously report instances of theft of state property by calling the company’s official hotline at +380 77 752 0000.
Currently, similar inspections are underway in other border and central regions of the country.
This was officially announced by Serhiy Koretskyi, Chairman of the Board of NJSC “Naftogaz of Ukraine.”
