Fraudsters who stole more than 2 million hryvnias from a military veteran’s widow were apprehended in Kharkiv

Law enforcement officials in Kharkiv have charged two men with embezzling financial assistance intended for the widow of a deceased soldier in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The criminal scheme was organized by a resident of the Dnipropetrovsk region and an inmate at the Manevychi Correctional Colony, who is serving a sentence for murder. 

According to the investigation, in January 2025, the accomplices gained unauthorized access to the victim’s online banking account and changed her login credentials to gain full control over her finances. 

In total, through 19 transactions, the suspects transferred more than 2 million hryvnias to their own accounts—funds that the state had paid to the woman following the tragic death of her husband on the front lines. The court has already ordered both suspects to be held in pretrial detention, and law enforcement agencies are currently identifying all individuals involved and the source of the leak of confidential information about the relatives of fallen Ukrainian defenders.

This was reported by the press service of the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office in a statement regarding the apprehension of the perpetrators and the cessation of their illegal activities. 

In Kryvyi Rih, police uncovered an international fraud scheme in which the participants posed as representatives of a major metallurgical giant and defrauded foreign companies of nearly 7 million hryvnias. The perpetrators entered into fictitious contracts for the supply of metallurgical products and embezzled the funds received.
