In Kharkiv, the man who attacked a police officer and three members of the Territorial Defense Forces was sentenced to 11 years in prison
The Novobavarsky District Court of Kharkiv sentenced a man to 11 years in prison for attacking a police officer and three military personnel with a knife during mobilization exercises. The defendant was found guilty of attempted murder of two or more people and of an attempt on the life of a law enforcement officer.
The incident occurred after 10:00 p.m. near a public transportation stop on National Guard Square, where a patrol consisting of a law enforcement officer and military personnel was performing their duties. When the police officer approached to check their documents, the man suddenly stabbed him in the head with a knife and subsequently wounded three other military personnel who were trying to stop him. The victims sustained lacerations to the head, torso, hands, and collarbone, which experts concluded constituted minor bodily injuries.
During the court hearing, the defendant pleaded not guilty, claiming that he did not recognize the officers and was merely acting in self-defense. However, the court rejected this testimony based on surveillance camera footage and expert reports, and also took into account that the attacker, who was subject to military conscription, had not been granted a deferment or exemption and had not updated his military registration records.
