At a hospital in Lviv, a surgical robot saved an 8-year-old boy’s kidney
Specialists at the St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital of Lviv’s First Medical Association successfully performed a complex kidney-preserving surgery on an 8-year-old boy from the Ternopil region using the Senhance robotic system with built-in artificial intelligence.
The patient was diagnosed with hydronephrosis—a condition that causes urine retention and poses a risk of complete destruction and removal of the organ.
The procedure to remove the diseased segment and reconstruct the kidney was performed in collaboration with Professor Narimantas Evaldas Samalavičius of Vilnius University. The use of the Senhance robot, equipped with 3-millimeter instruments and an artificial intelligence system, allowed the surgery to be performed with precision, avoiding damage to blood vessels and complications. According to the Lithuanian specialist, the Lviv team has fully mastered the technique, and doctors at the hospital are currently performing about two such procedures per week.

This was reported by St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital.
Previously, doctors managed to extend the pregnancy of a 28-year-old patient by another 97 days after her water broke. Thanks to this, the baby’s organs had time to develop sufficiently, and the boy was born in satisfactory condition and did not require intensive care.
Doctors diagnosed a 35-year-old woman from Lviv with an extremely rare jaw disorder.
As a reminder, Ukraine will establish its first Center for Robotic Surgery.
In Lviv, doctors performed a rare combined surgical procedure. During a cesarean section, a 26-year-old woman simultaneously underwent removal of a recurrent ventral hernia, which could have caused serious complications after childbirth.
