In Lviv, a 60-year-old woman underwent surgery to remove an 18.5-kilogram ovarian cyst
In Lviv, doctors removed a giant multicystic ovarian cyst from a 60-year-old patient. After the surgery, the woman lost 18.5 kg and returned home just two days later.
She sought medical attention due to significant abdominal swelling, sudden weight loss, shortness of breath, and frequent urination. Because of the pressure the mass exerted on her internal organs, she could only sleep in a semi-sitting position. She had been putting off surgery for many years, but after her condition worsened, she finally sought help.
During the examination, doctors also detected a uterine fibroid. According to MRI results and tumor marker tests, there were no signs of cancer. Doctors described the mass as record-breaking in size—according to the department head, he had never encountered a similar case in over 30 years of practice.
“Before the surgery, we examined the patient and determined the scope of the procedure. The woman was diagnosed with a giant multicystic ovarian cyst and a uterine fibroid. Based on the MRI results and tumor marker levels, there was no evidence of cancer. During the laparotomy, we first drained the fluid from each of the cyst’s chambers, removed the mass, and then removed the uterus and its adnexa,” says Taras Martyn, head of the gynecology department.
The mass turned out to be record-breaking in size. According to the doctor, in over 30 years of practice, he had never encountered a similar case. Overall, after the surgery, the patient’s weight decreased by 18.5 kg.
The patient tolerated the complex procedure well and returned home just two days after the surgery.
Doctors advise against delaying a visit to specialists if any growths have been diagnosed, as they can significantly impair quality of life, compress internal organs, and pose a risk of serious complications.
