Two men were arrested in Mykolaiv for setting a soldier's car on fire

In Mykolaiv, law enforcement officers quickly detained two men who are reasonably suspected of intentionally setting fire to a vehicle belonging to a Ukrainian soldier.

The suspects agreed to commit the crime for quick money, which they were promised by anonymous handlers via the Telegram messaging app.

Currently, both suspects in the criminal case have been officially charged and placed under strict pretrial detention.

According to official investigation data, a 36-year-old resident of Mykolaiv found a text advertisement on a popular messaging app offering the opportunity to make money illegally.

An unknown client offered him financial compensation for destroying property belonging to members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The mastermind behind the scheme decided not to act alone and enlisted the help of his 45-year-old acquaintance, a resident of the region, to carry out the plan.

The accomplices carefully prepared for the crime by purchasing a flammable mixture and the necessary tools.

On the night of June 20, the perpetrators arrived at a residential neighborhood in the regional capital, where they spotted a parked Opel Astra belonging to the soldier.

They doused the vehicle with flammable liquid and set it on fire, causing serious thermal damage to the car.

The massive fire quickly spread to nearby structures, causing significant damage to other civilian vehicles.

The fire partially spread to a Mitsubishi Outlander crossover parked nearby, which was also owned by an active-duty military servicemember.

Special police units, together with the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), conducted a comprehensive investigation and quickly identified the arsonists, detaining them in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

For the intentional destruction of another person’s property, committed by a group of individuals acting in concert, the detainees face up to 10 years in prison.

The court has already considered the prosecutors’ motion to impose a preventive measure on the detainees for the duration of the investigation.

This was reported by the Mykolaiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
