Ukraine is developing its own anti-ballistic missile that is cheaper than the Patriot
Ukraine is continuing to develop its own FP-7.x interceptor missile, which is expected to be significantly cheaper than its Western counterparts. Fire Point estimates that the cost of a single missile, including the homing seeker, will be less than $1 million.
According to Fire Point CEO Iryna Terekh, the project is being carried out in collaboration with two European and one Ukrainian company. The missile is planned to be integrated with an infrared seeker from the German company Diehl Defense, although other options are also being considered.
The first versions of the FP-7.x will operate on a principle similar to that of the American Patriot PAC-2—the target will be destroyed by a high-explosive fragmentation warhead. In the future, the developers plan to transition to “hit-to-kill” technology, which involves destroying the target with a direct hit.
Fire Point notes that the missiles are already ready for mass production, but the launch schedule depends on the completion of the homing system’s integration. The first results are expected in the coming months.
Initially, the company plans to produce up to 2,000 missiles per year, with the prospect of further increasing production.
