Ukraine is preparing to honor the creators of the Slavic alphabet on April 6
Tomorrow, April 6, 2026, the Orthodox Church commemorates two outstanding spiritual leaders: Archbishop Eutychius of Constantinople and Methodius the Equal-to-the-Apostles.
Both saints left a profound mark on the history of Christianity, defending the purity of the faith and the right of peoples to glorify God in their native languages.
Saint Eutychius, who became Patriarch of Constantinople in 552, went down in history as an unwavering defender of Orthodox doctrine.
He played a key role in convening the Fifth Ecumenical Council, where the truths regarding the nature of Christ were affirmed. Even under pressure from the imperial authorities, Eutychius refused to revise church dogmas, for which he spent twelve years in exile.
The saint’s return to the throne in 577 became a symbol of the triumph of truth over political interests.
His life is an example of how spiritual wisdom and asceticism help one endure the most severe trials. Believers still turn to him today with prayers for healing and spiritual strength.
On this same day, we commemorate Saint Methodius, who, together with his brother Cyril, became an enlightener of the Slavic peoples. Having renounced a brilliant administrative career, Methodius chose the path of missionary work.
It was thanks to his work in Great Moravia that Christian teachings became accessible to broad segments of the population through translations of books into an understandable language.
The creation of the Glagolitic alphabet and the translation of liturgical texts laid the foundation for Slavic writing and culture.
Methodius bravely endured persecution by the Latin clergy and even imprisonment, but he did not cease his educational activities. His legacy later became the foundation for the spiritual flourishing of Kievan Rus’.
