Ukraine could sign an EU accession treaty as early as 2027
Ukraine is capable of closing most of the negotiation chapters on accession to the European Union within the next 12 to 18 months and proceeding to the signing of the accession treaty as early as 2027.
This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Taras Kachka during question time with the government.
According to him, the European Union has provided Ukraine with 145 requirements necessary for opening negotiation clusters.
“Most of them concern bringing Ukrainian legislation in line with EU standards, as well as the day-to-day practices of institutions. All these requirements are realistic. Over the next 12–18 months, we can close most of the negotiation chapters and move on to signing the EU accession treaty next year,” Kachka noted.
He clarified that in March, Ukraine received the second set of conditions for concluding technical negotiations across all areas. Currently, cooperation with the European Commission is ongoing across all six negotiation clusters.
At the same time, the official emphasized that even after the possible signing of the agreement, the accession process will not be complete. The document must be ratified by the parliaments of all EU member states, as well as in Ukraine, which could take several more years.
The day before, Hungary’s future Prime Minister Péter Magyar held talks with representatives of the European Union. The parties discussed the prospects for opening negotiation clusters as part of Ukraine’s EU accession process.
