Ukraine plans to develop its own missile defense shield, FREYJA, by 2027
Ukraine is working on its own missile defense system, FREYJA, and plans to complete its development in the first half of 2027. European partners are already being invited to join the project, and an international steering committee is set to begin its work in the near future.
Ukraine expects to complete the development of its own missile defense system, FREYJA, in the first half of 2027. This was announced by Davyd Aloyan, Deputy Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, in an interview with Reuters.
According to him, FREYJA is intended to serve as a prototype for a future European missile defense system. Ukraine is currently actively working on the project and is inviting its allies to join in its development.
Aloyan noted that the first meeting of the international steering committee will take place soon. The committee will assess the amount of funding required for research, development, and the system’s further advancement.
“Since we are working on such a tight schedule, we have an ambitious goal—to have a ready MVP (minimum viable product—ed.) in the first half of next year,” Aloyan said.
He explained that the first phase involves creating a prototype capable of demonstrating the technology’s functionality and delivering initial practical results.
The impetus for the project’s development was a summit in Paris that took place two weeks ago. There, leaders of ten European countries—including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy—along with representatives of the defense industry, officially launched a coalition to develop missile defense.
The new system is expected to become a joint European project, with Ukraine serving as one of its key participants.
The need to create its own missile defense system stems from the fact that Ukraine currently relies heavily on American Patriot systems. These remain the only systems capable of effectively intercepting Russian ballistic missiles.
Therefore, the development of FREYJA is intended to strengthen Ukraine’s air and missile defense capabilities and, in the long term, reduce its dependence on foreign defense systems, according to Reuters.
As a reminder, Russia may take steps in the coming months that will serve as a direct test of the readiness of the United Kingdom and its NATO allies to respond. The British publication Daily Mail published this assessment, citing intelligence sources.
