The Ukrainian company Fire Point expects to begin work on its first ballistic missile interceptors by the end of 2026 as part of the Freya missile defense project.

According to Fire Point co-founder and chief designer Denis Shtilman, the company is already finalizing an agreement with a European manufacturer to supply an infrared homing seeker for the interceptor missile. Negotiations are also underway regarding the supply of a radio-frequency seeker.

In addition, Fire Point has signed a memorandum of understanding with the German company Hensoldt, which will supply TRML-4D radars for the project.

Shtilman noted that due to the wartime conditions in Ukraine, testing of new developments is proceeding much faster than in European countries.

“What might take anywhere from six months to a year in Europe can be tested in Ukraine in a single day,” he said.

According to him, if European partners make the necessary decisions promptly, work on the interceptor missiles could begin as early as the end of this year.

In addition, Fire Point plans to begin flight tests this summer of its new FP-9 ballistic missile, which has an 800-kg warhead and a range of up to 850 km. Combat tests are expected in the fall.

The company also reported that negotiations to sell a 30% stake to a Middle Eastern investor for $760 million have been suspended, as Fire Point’s current valuation has risen significantly. According to Stielerman, an international investment bank recently valued the company at $5.8 billion.

As a reminder, Ukrainian developers are working on creating a new air defense system called Freya, which is designed to intercept ballistic missiles and operate independently of other countries. At the same time, development is underway on the FP-9 ballistic missile system, which is being called a key element of future deterrence against Russia.

Testing of the new European Freya air defense system, which is described as a more affordable alternative to the American Patriot system, may begin in Ukraine in the near future.
