The name of this full moon is associated with a natural phenomenon that occurs among deer every year during this period.
The full moon in July is traditionally called the Deer Moon. This name comes from observations of nature: it is during this time that male deer actively grow new antlers. As researchers explain, every year deer grow new antlers before the rutting season—their breeding season. At first, the new antlers are covered with a special tissue that helps them grow quickly. After the rutting season ends, in late winter, deer shed their old antlers so they can grow new ones later.
The names of the full moons are often associated with natural phenomena, seasonal changes, or cultural traditions. The Stag Moon is one such name, derived from ancient observations of the natural world. The full moon will peak on July 29 at 5:36 p.m. Kyiv time.
