Ukrzaliznytsia is raising fares for commuter trains and introducing a new payment system
“Ukrzaliznytsia” is switching to a new six-zone fare system for commuter trains, under which the ticket price depends on the distance traveled.
As of September 15, the updated fares have already taken effect in the Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Zhytomyr regions, and as of September 22, they will be implemented in the Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, and Cherkasy regions. In the future, the new model is planned to be expanded to other regions of Ukraine.
The new model provides for a fixed price within each of the six fare zones, regardless of the exact number of kilometers traveled. The fare for distances up to 50 km is 30 hryvnias; from 51 to 90 km—55 hryvnias; from 91 to 130 km—75 hryvnias, from 131 to 170 km—95 hryvnias, from 171 to 250 km—115 hryvnias, and on routes over 250 km—150 hryvnias. For example, for passengers traveling 51 km or 90 km, the ticket price will be the same—55 hryvnias.
The company attributes the fare changes to the long-standing unprofitability of the commuter sector due to local administrations’ failure to cover compensation for transporting passengers eligible for fare discounts, as well as rising costs of electricity, fuel, and other resources. Ukrzaliznytsia expects that the price adjustment will help reduce losses, preserve the existing route network, and allocate additional funds for the repair and modernization of rolling stock.
Ukrzaliznytsia warned of significant train delays due to attacks by the Russian Federation.
Due to scheduled maintenance work from September 7 to 12, several commuter trains operated on a modified schedule.
