A Russian agent who was planning a terrorist attack was exposed in Izmail
The Counterintelligence Directorate of the Security Service of Ukraine thwarted an attempt by Russian intelligence services to carry out a terrorist attack in the Odesa region. A Russian agent was detained in the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district who was planning to blow up an administrative building of a government agency in Izmail.
According to the investigation, the suspect was supposed to plant a homemade explosive device with a power equivalent to 10 kg of TNT near the administrative building.
The explosive was additionally loaded with metal screws and bolts to increase its destructive power.
According to the SBU, Russian intelligence services planned to remotely detonate the explosive device during rush hour, aiming to cause the maximum number of civilian casualties.

According to the Russian side’s plan, the terrorist attack was intended to destabilize the socio-political situation in southern Ukraine.
SBU officers uncovered the plot in advance and detained the agent as he was finishing assembling the homemade explosive device in his own apartment.
According to the case file, a local man, who had been recruited by Russian intelligence agencies via Telegram, was involved in planning the attack.
According to the investigation, representatives of the Russian Federation took an interest in him in July of this year, when the man was looking for work in the chat rooms of Telegram channels.

After agreeing to the Russians’ offer of “easy” money, he began carrying out his handler’s instructions.
To prepare the explosion, the man received step-by-step instructions on how to build a homemade explosive device and purchased the necessary components.
To detonate the device remotely, he equipped the explosive with a cell phone to which the Russian side had remote access.
SBU investigators informed the suspect that he is suspected of violating Part 1 of Article 14 and Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—preparation for a terrorist act.
The suspect is being held in custody without the right to bail.

If convicted, he faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
This was reported by the SBU.
Earlier, in the Kyiv region, the SBU foiled a contract killing of a well-known public figure, which, according to the investigation, was organized by the Russian intelligence service. A 19-year-old resident of Mykolaiv was detained while preparing for the crime.
In Kropyvnytskyi, the Security Service of Ukraine detained a local resident suspected of collaborating with the FSB and coordinating Russian missile and drone attacks on fuel, energy, and logistics infrastructure.
