Onion prices have risen in Ukraine due to declining supplies and rising demand
Ukraine has seen its first increase in onion wholesale prices since February 2026. The rise is attributed to seasonal depletion of farm inventories and increased wholesale purchasing activity.
This is reported by analysts from the EastFruit project.
As of April 30, 2026, Ukrainian farmers are offering onions at prices ranging from 4 to 9 UAH per kilogram. This is, on average, 40% more expensive than at the end of the previous week.
At the same time, on an annual basis, the product remains significantly cheaper: compared to the same period in 2025, prices are approximately 68% lower.
Analysts note that the onion market is under pressure from limited supply. Most farms have already sold their stocks, and high-quality product in warehouses is becoming increasingly scarce.
Farmers who still have produce are holding back from selling quickly and are expecting prices to rise further.
It is also noted that a significant portion of the remaining harvest does not meet the requirements for long-term storage, which further reduces market supply and supports price growth.
As a reminder, the Ukrainian market is seeing rising potato prices driven by strong demand from retail chains and wholesale companies.
As a reminder, Ukrainian potato producers are facing growing pressure from imports from Poland, which is leading to lower prices and instability in the domestic market.
As a reminder, in mid-September, Ukrainian farmers began lowering potato prices, with the average price ranging from 9 to 16 UAH/kg.
Ukraine is currently experiencing so-called summer deflation—a traditional price drop associated with the new harvest.
